Aggies pound OSU

A&M big man shrugs off in-game injuries

? Antanas Kavaliauskas said returning to the game after a bloody nose in the first half and an injured groin in the second half wasn’t that difficult.

After all, getting treated for those injuries gave Texas A&M’s big man time to rest and recharge.

Acie Law had 16 points, and Kavaliauskas scored 14 despite the injuries, and Texas A&M beat Oklahoma State, 67-49, on Saturday night.

It is Texas A&M’s first victory over a ranked opponent this season and its ninth straight victory since losing to then top-10 teams LSU and UCLA in consecutive games in early December.

The Aggies, who never trailed, also got their 18th straight home win in front of a school-record crowd of 13,187, and it was their 11th Big 12 win in a row, also an A&M record.

Kavaliauskas, who also had five rebounds and two assists, was forced to the bench in the first half after he was hit hard in the nose, but he soon returned. He would have been back sooner, but trainers couldn’t get his nose to stop bleeding.

“Coming back, it wasn’t that hard,” Kavaliauskas said. “I got some rest … and I was ready to go for 40 more minutes.”

Midway through the second half, he crashed to the court after a violent collision with Oklahoma State’s Marcus Dove and had to be helped off the court. That time he was back in a couple of minutes.

“It didn’t hurt,” Kavaliauskas said. “I will feel it tomorrow, but it didn’t hurt during the game.”

But A&M coach Billy Gillispie, ever the perfectionist, still found fault with the 6-foot-9 players’ performance – however gutsy it might have been.

Texas A&M's Antanas Kavaliauskas (44) is fouled by Oklahoma State's Marcus Dove. The Aggies dominated the Cowboys, 67-49, Saturday in College Station, Texas.

“He’s got to get tougher,” Gillispie said. “He had five balls slip through his hands. Whether you’ve got a bad ankle and your nose is bleeding or whatever, you’ve still got to snatch those balls.”

Texas A&M led by as many as 15 in the first half and 10 at halftime, but Oklahoma State went on a 9-2 run to open the second half and cut the lead to 40-37.

“We got a pretty good lead there, and they wouldn’t ever bow out,” Gillispie said.

Villanova 76, No. 21 Texas 69

Philadelphia – It wasn’t the rookie star everyone expected.

Villanova Freshman Scottie Reynolds scored 26 points, and Villanova held Texas’ first-year standout Kevin Durant to 12.

Durant came in averaging 34.0 points over the last four games, and Villanova used a number of players, including the 6-foot-2 Reynolds, who was giving up seven inches, in holding him under 20 points for just the third time this season. Durant finished 4-for-15 from the field and missed all six of his shots in the second half.

Oklahoma 91, Baylor 51

Norman, Okla. – Nate Carter scored a season-high 22 points to lead Oklahoma.

Carter scored five straight points that helped ignite a 19-2 first-half run, turning an 18-14 deficit into a 33-20 advantage.

Baylor started quickly behind the play of Aaron Bruce, who scored 10 of his 12 points during the opening seven minutes. The Bears led by as many as eight before Oklahoma began methodically chipping away behind Carter’s inside play and an attacking man-to-man defense.

Nebraska 71, Colorado 50

Lincoln, Neb. – Nebraska opened up a 10-0 lead to start the game and never let Colorado get closer than eight points thereafter.

Aleks Maric scored 28 of the Huskers’ points.

Nebraska took advantage of six Colorado turnovers to open the game, going up 10-0 on J.R. Strowbridge’s three-pointer with 16:17 remaining.

The Buffaloes turned the ball over 14 times in the first half. Nebraska scored 16 of its 30 first-half points off those turnovers.
