Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan 20, 1907: “This has been a day of wrecks for rail operation in America, with problems in Indiana heading the list. There were also fatalities at De Soto east of here. Death totals are not available but there have been many, along with many injuries, and damage has been high. : Work in the local Weber Piano Factory keeps increasing and there are now 40 workmen with more due to be hired soon. A full quota of workmen, 200 in all, may soon be at the humming plant. : Hugh Means, an honest probate judge, is not allowing any foolishness in the trial of the Greek Coutrakon who is on trial for indecent activities with Mabel Coy. Coutrakon is trying to ‘get married’ to the girl and Means says that will not be allowed. : Temperance people are gearing up for a hard rush against liquor where legislators are concerned in Topeka.”
