Frank Spencer, Lawrence, will celebrate his 90th birthday with a reception from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 28 at Drury Place at Alvamar, 1510 St. Andrews Drive. Friends and neighbors are invited, and his children and their families will host the gathering.

Spencer was born Jan. 28, 1917, in rural Douglas County. He worked as a farmer and truck driver, retiring from Graham Ship by Truck about 30 years ago. He volunteered at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for 20 years.

Spencer is a member of the Church of Christ in Lawrence.

His children are Dorothy Martin and husband Gerald, Baldwin City; and Calvin Spencer and wife Shirley, Lawrence. He has four grandchildren, one stepgrandchild, three great-granddaughters and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

Les Beguelin, Topeka, is celebrating his 80th birthday.

He was born Jan. 27, 1927, in Lawrence, the son of Harry and Bertha Beguelin. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1944. He lived in Lawrence for 55 years and recently moved to Topeka to be closer to family.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and received a bachelor’s degree in history from Kansas University. Beguelin worked for the federal government for 33 years and retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Kansas City in 1982.

He married Alice Jean Degner in 1949. The couple have three children: Kathy Blosser and her late husband Russ, Topeka; Debbie Erhart and husband Jon, Dodge City; and Scott Beguelin and wife Renee, Silver Lake. They have 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Edna Jones, Baldwin City, will celebrate her 80th birthday with an open house reception from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Gospel Chapel, Third and Chapel streets, Baldwin City. The community is invited. Cards are welcome, but no gifts are requested.

Kathleen Emma Lee Schaetzel, Lawrence, was named to the honor roll for the fall term 2006 at Deerfield Academy.

To be listed on the honor roll, a student must have an overall average of 87 or higher. Schaetzel is a senior at the independent secondary school in Deerfield, Mass.

Spencer Wilson, Eudora, was named to the Dean’s List for grades achieved during the fall 2006 semester at Harding University. To be named to the list, a student must have an average scholarship level of at least 3.65. Wilson is a freshman majoring in accounting at the university in Searcy, Ark.

Larissa A. Maranell and April J. Miller, both of Lawrence, and Stephanie R. Gaines, Overbrook, were named to the Academic Honor Roll for the 2006 fall trimester at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville. To be named to the honor roll, a student must attain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Students of the Month for December at Oskaloosa High School are Ali Houk, senior; Boone Heston and Dillon Robbins, both juniors; and Audrey Trowbridge, freshman.

The students were selected based on their positive contributions to the school and community.

Rebecca R. Glass, Lawrence, was named to the Dean’s List for her work during the fall 2006 semester at Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss. To be named to the list, students must earn a grade point average between 3.50 and 3.79.

Kayleigh Anderson, a student at Prairie Park School, has been accepted into the People to People World Leadership Forum. Anderson will travel to Washington, D.C., in March to join a select group of students to study leadership and explore the area’s monuments and institutions. She was selected based on outstanding scholastic merit, civic involvement and leadership potential.

Several area students were named to honor rolls at Pittsburg State University for the fall 2006 semester. To qualify for All-A Scholastic Honors, a student must receive a grade of A in all credit course work for the semester.

To qualify for Dean’s Scholastic Honors, a student must receive a grade-point average of 3.6.
