Veritas squads swept at Elwood tournament
Elwood ? Veritas Christian couldn’t overcome a slow start in a 68-41 high school boys basketball loss Thursday against St. Joseph (Mo.) Christian in the Elwood tournament.
Veritas trailed 20-8 after one quarter and 41-14 at halftime.
“We got killed in the first half,” Veritas coach Doug Bennett said. “They were just a good quality opponent. We dug ourselves a hole that was too great to overcome.”
Michael Kay scored 14 points to lead the Eagles, and Micah Barclay and Isaiah Dover added eight points apiece.
Veritas (1-11) will play at 10:30 a.m. Saturday as the tournament continues.
Elwood 50, Veritas girls 42
Elwood – Veritas made 26 steals, but cold shooting doomed the Eagles on Thursday night in the Elwood tournament.
Veritas shot 22.7 from the field.
“For the most part, I was pretty proud of the intensity we showed on our press,” Veritas coach Kevin Shelton said, but added, “that was our worst shooting game by far.”
Kristie Tiegreen led Veritas with 20 points. Caroline Mayhew added seven points and eight steals.
Veritas outscored Elwood, 28-20, in the second half.
Veritas (3-7) will play at 9 a.m. Saturday as the tournament continues.
