Terror alert prompts heightened security

? Russia went on high alert Wednesday, deploying thousands of extra police and urging public vigilance in major cities.

On Tuesday, the Federal Security Service said the national anti-terrorism headquarters had received information from foreign countries about the possibility of a terrorist act involving ground transport and subways.

A committee spokesman said Wednesday that Russian authorities had so far found no evidence supporting the existence of a threat. “The information we received from our foreign colleagues has not been confirmed at this time,” said the spokesman, Nikolai Sintsov.

Sintsov said authorities detained two people in the western Siberian city of Tyumen found in possession of 22 pounds of explosives, and were checking two suspicious packages found in Moscow – one in a subway station.

Citing police, Russian news agencies reported that the package was labeled “infection” and held numerous capsules containing a gray substance. Officials at Moscow’s consumer safety agency said they believed it was not dangerous, RIA-Novosti reported.
