Fire loss in Lawrence hit an all-time high during 1966. The $1.5 million downtown WREN building fire provided the major thrust and there had been nearly $600,000 in loss at the Rusty’s Hillcrest store.

Kansas University sophomore Jim Ryun of mile record fame was named 1966’s top track and field performer by the Sports Illustrated magazine.
