Old hand tries fresh run for school board

Mary Loveland served four terms, ending in 2003

A seventh candidate has filed for one of four seats up for election April 3 on Lawrence’s school board – Mary Loveland, a former longtime board member.

Loveland, who filed today at the Douglas County Clerk’s office, said several people have asked her to run again.

“I think I bring some strengths to the board. By nature I am a problem solver,” Loveland said.

Loveland, 58, lost her bid for a fifth four-year term in the 2003 election, finishing in seventh out of eight places.

The six other candidates who have filed so far are Marlene Merrill, Robert Rauktis, Victor Sisk, incumbent Rich Minder, Michael Machell and Michael Pomes.

The filing deadline is noon Tuesday. If more than eight candidates file, a primary election will be held on Feb. 27.

The seats up for election are those now held by Minder, board president Sue Morgan, Cindy Yulich and Leonard Ortiz.

Morgan and Yulich don’t plan to run again. Ortiz said he was leaning against it.
