Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan 13, 1907: “Charles Curtis was named the state’s U.S. senator for both the long and short terms during a Republican caucus in Topeka. He led all ballots and our W.R. Stubbs was one of the contenders. However, Curtis eventually was elected by acclamation after four ballotings when he led each time. : Stockholder and director meetings of local financial agencies continue and all seem to be entering 1907 in excellent condition. : The railroads are peculiarly shortsighted in the course they are pursuing in dealing with the public. Their overbearing tactics are driving people steadily toward a belief that government ownership of railroads would be a good thing. : In a written article, Andrew Carnegie, the man who created our library, says the days is coming when brains will stand above dollars and that millionaires should share as much wealth as possible with less fortunate people but should not be depleted before the donor’s death.”
