Perry superintendent to retire at end of year
Steve Johnston will retire later this year as the superintendent of Perry-Lecompton public schools.
Johnston, who has led the district for six years, turned in his notice to the board of education earlier this week. His last day on the job will be June 30.
The board selected Assistant Superintendent Dennis Yoder to replace Johnston.
Johnston’s retirement was not unexpected, board president Greg Howard said.
“I feel he’s done a great job while he’s been here,” Howard said. “We’re very happy with the leadership he’s provided.”
The board chose to elevate Yoder to the superintendent’s job because it “was a logical decision,” Howard said.
The board will work with Yoder during the next two months in the process of selecting an assistant superintendent, Howard said.
Yoder has been the assistant superintendent for three years. Previously he was the principal at Lecompton Elementary School for 17 years.
