Four area players selected for Shrine Bowl

Free State High football standouts Ryan Murphy and Mikel Ruder and Lawrence High wide receiver Nathan Padia have been selected to play in the 2007 Kansas Shrine Bowl.

Also appearing from the area is Mill Valley standout Justin Woods, a Kansas State commitment.

All four players will play on the East squad in the annual game, which will benefit the Shriner’s Hospital and is slated to be played July 28 at Fort Hays State University in Hays.

Ruder and Murphy helped lead Free State to the state semifinals and an 11-1 record in 2006.

Padia, meanwhile, provided a potent pass-catching option Lawrence High hadn’t seen in years, helping the Lions to a 6-5 record.

Players are selected by Kansas sports media members and coaches from around the state.
