Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 10, 1907: “In Topeka there is a movement to establish a night school in which penitentiary convicts who can neither read nor write can be taught the rudiments of learning. The goal is a notable one but the cost will be about $2,000 per convicted a year and there will be opposition because of that. : The fight continues on judges’ salaries with few supporting a $5,000 annual wage. Most want supreme judges to get $4,000 and district judges $3,000. : Several railroads are offering free tickets to women attending major social service events in Topeka.”
