Police tally rest area seizure to $2 million

The Franklin County sheriff’s office finished counting the cash it seized at a rest area on I-35 south of Ottawa on Dec. 26.

The final tally: nearly $2.1 million, according to a press release from the office. The cash was seized after a deputy searched a semi parked at the rest area and found a vacuum-sealed bag containing about $87,000. Police dogs searched the truck and located additional bags containing about the same amount of money.

The largest seizure was of $3.7 million in Colby in January 2000.
