Old Home Town – 40 years ago

Plans were announced for a two-stadium Kansas City sports complex with a sliding roof for bad weather over the football and baseball stadiums. The location was to be along I-70 in the Independence, Mo., area and the cost was to be about $55 million. The football stadium was to seat 75,000 and the baseball stadium was to hold about 50,000, according to the original plans.

With the past December setting an all-time high figure for building permits, the year 1966 wound up as the city’s second biggest from the standpoint of dollars. The final total was around $7.5 million. The No. 1 mark of $9.3 million had been set in 1965.
