Money tip

? January is one of the busiest times of the year for fitness clubs, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a good deal on a membership. Here’s how:

¢ Don’t be afraid to bargain. The health clubs want your business, so let your top-choice gym know that you can get a better deal elsewhere. You can probably get them to knock as much as $15 off your membership dues.

¢ Ask them to reduce or eliminate your initiation membership fee. If a health club has had a half-off membership deal in the recent past, tell them you want that deal or you will take your business elsewhere.

¢ Try negotiating a month-to-month contract. If you can’t get it, don’t sign up for more than one year. You also can offer to pay cash for a full year in return for a discount on the annual dues.

¢ Consider local chains instead of national chains. They often offer better deals.

¢ Find a buddy and try negotiating as a duo. Health clubs will see two potential losses and may be likely to offer you a better deal.
