Suspect faces 25 years for murder of musician

? One of four suspects in the shooting death of a Kansas City Symphony musician was sentenced Friday to 25 years in prison.

Steven Peters, a 51-year-old double bass player, was killed in September 2005 at his Independence duplex in what Jackson County prosecutors described as a botched burglary.

Richard D. Jones, 22, of Kansas City, was found guilty of second-degree murder and armed criminal action.

Jackson County Circuit Judge Steven Nixon sentenced Jones to 25 years on each count. The sentences run concurrently.

Police have said the suspects planned to break into Peters’ home, tie him up and steal military-type firearms they believed he kept. But Peters greeted the burglars with a handgun and shots were fired, killing Peters and wounding one suspect in the arm.

Jones is the second suspect to be sentenced in the slaying. Sylvon Sese, of Independence, was sentenced to 25 years in October. Jonathan A. Box, of Lee’s Summit, will be sentenced later this month. Jones’ brother, Michael Jones, also of Kansas City, is expected to enter a plea Jan. 12.
