From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 7, 1907: “A case of Glanders, the most deadly disease to which horses are subject, was found in Grant Township here this week. A horse worth $175, belonging to George Lait, had to be shot, and precautions had to be taken to prevent the spread of the disease. The horse had been used for railroad work and there is little evidence that the disease will spread. But officials will keep watch because of its seriousness. : ‘Doc’ Burns yesterday deliberately shot and killed John Bull Jenkins. Both parties are east side rounders and the affair was the outcome of a quarrel that started at a beer party. Burns had been beaten by Jenkins and friends and sought revenge. Burns immediately surrendered to police, saying he acted in self-defense.
