Old Home Town – 25 years ago

Local residents were getting ready to battle the school board in regard to the proposal to close four schools, which the board said would save more than $115,000 a year. The schools involved were Grant, Riverside, India and Kaw Valley. Considerable opposition was gathering, patrons said.

Kansas University faculty and staff members polled by the Journal-World said they were quite pleased with the performance of new Chancellor Gene Budig and said “he seems to be keeping his promises.”

Paul Carttar of Lawrence had been named an assistant to Arthur Burns, U.S. ambassador to West Germany. Carttar, a 1976 Lawrence High graduate, was to serve Burns, former Federal Reserve chief, as a key attache.
