Old Hometown – 40 years ago

Three Kansas City youths were killed in a one-car accident two miles east of the East Lawrence Interchange on the Kansas Turnpike.

Billy Chappell got the No. 1 Douglas County auto license tag after trying and failing for five years. He had camped overnight on the courthouse steps.

The Independent Laundry-Miller Furniture-Wren Building fire resulting in well more than $1.5 million in damage and loss was judged the top local news story of the past year by Journal-World staff members. No. 2 was the upset of Republican Gov. William Avery by Democrat Robert Docking, a former Lawrence resident and banker. His father, George, had served as a Democratic governor and been a bank executive here.
