From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 3, 1907: “From Topeka comes this dispatch: William T. Vernon, a full-blooded negro from Kansas, now holding the office of register of the treasury, aspires to represent the Second Congressional District of his state in Washington. He is contemplating making the race when his term as register expires. Many are taking notice of his plans. : A case of attempted suicide by a local woman yesterday by taking carbolic acid is causing drug outlets to become more careful about sales of potentially deadly substances, we are told. But there are many substances not covered by law and there is concern how suicidal people can get hold of them. : An inquest is planned for a Rock Island rail accident yesterday that killed 33 and injured more than 40 in the area about 30 miles west of here. Rail travel continues to be hazardous in some sections. : Cartoonist R.F. Outcalt, creator of ‘Buster Brown’ and various other well-known funny supplement characters, lectured and drew pictures for a crowd of more than 1,200 at the Fraternal Aid Hall last night.”
