Highberger to run again for office

Commissioner has served since 2003

Lawrence City Commissioner Boog Highberger says he’s going to run for office again.

Highberger, who was first elected in 2003, said this afternoon he intends to formally file for a second term at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at City Hall.

“We will deliver our filing papers to the City Clerk’s office, then hold a quick press conference in the City Commission room,” Highberger said.

He plans to make the event festive with fiddle music and homemade cookies.

Highberger is the second incumbent to announce plans to seek re-election.

Commissioner David Schauner confirmed his plan to run for re-election on Tuesday and made a formal announcement today at City Hall.

The third seat up for election on the five-member commissioner is held by Mike Rundle, who has not yet announced whether he will run again.

Two other candidates have filed for the April 3 election: Rob Chestnut, chief financial officer at Allen Press, and Mike Dever, owner of a Lawrence-based environmental consulting firm.

The filing deadline is Jan. 23. If more than six candidates emerge, a primary will be held on Feb. 27.
