City OKs exploration of bus systems merger

City commissioners are willing to discuss a possible merger of the Lawrence Transit System with two systems operating at Kansas University.

But some commissioners sounded cautionary at Tuesday evening’s meeting, saying that any merger requiring additional city funding could be difficult to accomplish.

Commissioners formally received a public transit study that looked at ways the city’s T system, the KU on Wheels system and KU’s new park-and-ride system could be operated jointly.

The creation of a public transit advisory board that would have representation from the city, KU administrators and students was one recommendation of the report. But the report, as previously unveiled in November, said the city should strongly consider spending upward of $500,000 more per year on public transit service.

Mayor Mike Amyx and Commissioner David Schauner both said that would be a difficult idea for them to support. But commissioners were unanimous in agreeing to open discussions with KU about merger or consolidation possibilities.
