Old Hometown – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 2, 1907: “A deal is pending for the purchase of a considerable amount of property adjoining Lawrence on the south. A local real estate agent is now trying to get possession of the properties and is said to be working for Eastern interests. The main tract of land is that which is now taken up by pastures at the south end of Massachusetts Street. A rumor is that that the Orient Railroad is behind the purchase but nobody will confirm that. : Rock Island trains No. 29 and 30 collided head-on between Volland and Altavista, about 40 miles west of here, early this morning and it is reported that 30 were killed and 40 more injured.”
