Economic hard times were being noticed by local travel agencies, which said that travel habits had been noticeably altered by the financial problems faced by many during what most considered a serious national recession. The inflation situation was beginning to had improve, however, and interest rates had begun a steady decline.

Gov. John Carlin announced he would go with a bipartisan proposal on the Kansas oil and gas severance tax. But Carlin said the plan did not have much chance of passing through the Legislature unless Senate President Ross Doyen tempered his strong opposition.

Kansas University law professor Martin Dickinson was elected president of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce for the coming year.
