WSU stumbles to finish

Loss at Creighton caps late-season dive

? Creighton hit nine of its first 12 three-point shots and held Wichita State’s leading scorer to just one field goal in its 71-54 win Saturday in Qwest Center Omaha.

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Bluejays (19-10, 13-5) while sending the Shockers to their fourth straight loss and an 8-10 finish in the Missouri Valley Conference. Wichita State opened the season with nine straight wins and reached the Top 10 in the national rankings before stumbling to a 17-13 finish.

“Every game against those guys for the last couple of years has been close,” said Bluejay forward Anthony Tolliver, who finished with 11 points. “It was nice to get a W in double digits. It helps our confidence.”

Dane Watts made his first five three-point attempts on a day when Creighton shot 56 percent from beyond the arc. He was one of four Bluejays to score in double figures, finishing with 15 points.

Nick Porter led the way with 17 points, 13 of which came in the second half.

The Bluejays broke a 23-23 tie with an 8-0 run and led 33-25 at the half.

Watts’ third three-pointer started the run, and a three by Isacc Miles finished it. Creighton hit six of nine three-point attempts in the opening 20 minutes, then extended its lead to 15 following threes by Porter and Watts early in the second half.

“It seemed like they made every shot tonight,” Wichita State coach Mark Turgeon said. “It seemed like everyone stepped up and knocked them down. The three-point line was the difference.”

Wichita State got 16 points and 12 rebounds from P.J. Couisnard, but leading scorer Kyle Wilson finished with only six points after recording 25 in a win over Creighton in January.

The Shockers trailed by 16 in the second half before cutting the margin in half.
