Trial date set for Byrd

St. Louis – St. Louis Rams backup tight end Dominique Byrd will go to trial July 9 after pleading not guilty Friday to charges he assaulted a man at a downtown St. Louis nightclub. Byrd, 23, faces charges of assault and armed criminal action.

Tomlinson’s father killed

Waco, Texas – The father of NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson was killed Friday when the pickup truck in which he was riding blew a tire and flipped on a highway. Oliver Tomlinson was killed at about 1:30 p.m. in the one-vehicle rollover, said Charlie Morgan, a Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman. Oliver Tomlinson was 71.

Browns win coin toss

Cleveland – Cleveland won a coin flip with Tampa Bay on Friday at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis and will pick third overall in April’s draft. The Buccaneers will select fourth. The teams finished with identical 4-12 records last season and their opponents had the same winning percentage, making the coin toss necessary.
