Joe Brynds and Ashleigh Anderson, Overland Park, announce the birth of their daughter, Kaedence Elaine Brynds, born Feb. 10, 2007, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Maternal grandparents are Sheri Anderson, Des Moines, Iowa, and Pat Anderson, Overland Park. Paternal grandparents are Earl and Adrianne Brynds, and Judy Brynds, all of Lawrence. Great-grandparents are Albert and Violet Brynds, Lawrence; Phyllis Peterson, Winterset, Iowa; John and Ruth Anderson, Fort Madison, Iowa; Lynn Humston, Benton, Ky.; and Roberta McAllister, Norton.
¢Angela and Tim Silvers, Baldwin City, announce the birth of their son, Ty Bradley Silvers, born Feb. 8, 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He weighed 8 pounds, 9 ounces, and was 21 inches long. He joins sister Emily, 3. Maternal grandparents are Genny and Bob Hammersmith, Lawrence. Paternal grandparents are Kelly and Kevin Otterman, Claremore, Okla.; and Brad and Renae Silvers, Topeka. Great-grandparents are Peggy and Carl Silvers, Lone Star; June Grant, Lawrence; Uveda Otterman, Basehor; and Greg and Janet McGee, Lawrence.
¢Benjamin Harvey, a senior at Free State High School, received Kansas State University’s Foundation Scholarship during ceremonies Jan. 29 at K-State. Harvey is the son of Joe and Mary Harvey, Lawrence, and the grandson of Joyce M. Hansen, Bellevue, Neb.
¢Brian Teefey and Bailey DeReus, both Kansas University students from Lawrence, will serve on the 2007 homecoming steering committee. Teefey, a Lawrence High School graduate, will serve as daily events co-chairman. He is a junior in accounting and management, and is the son of John and Teresa Teefey. DeReus will serve as community and campus outreach chairman. He is a senior in journalism and mass communications, and political science.
¢The Knights of Columbus announces winners of the District 18 free-throw contest, conducted Feb. 11 in the gym at St. John’s School. The district includes Lawrence and Eudora.
Girls who won their age division include Sophia Lehmann, 10; Kelsey Balluch, 11; Victoria Lehmann, 12; Cecilia Lehmann, 13; and Annie Libeer, 14. Boys who won their division include Jakob Walter, 10; Clayton Pfeifer, 11; Jacob Pfeifer, 13; and Will Libeer, 14. The winners were eligible to compete in the regionals set for Feb. 18 in Meriden.
¢The Lawrence Accredited Music Teachers Association will present two recitals Thursday at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H. Students performing at 7 p.m. will be Rowan and Will Laufer, Madeline Dethoff, Omar Roth, Calvin and Marlee Yost-Wolff, Jessica and Jeffrey Chen, Ben Katz, Benedict and Mariam Ali, Ellie and Cal Young, Karen McCain, Quinn LeBar, Everett Waechter, Di Xie and Larresa Kelpin. Students playing at the 7:30 p.m. recital will be Katie and Zach Stites, Sophie Laufer, Eric Palmquist, Nora Elbayoumy, Tammy Liu, Betty Zhang, Samantha Schueler, Rodi Torres-Gavosto and Adrienne Willems. These performers represent the studios of Carol Cook, Elaine de San Miguel and Jean Drumm.
¢Titus Staples, Eudora, and Erin Elizabeth Michaelis, Lawrence, recently earned master’s degrees from Fort Hays State University. Staples earned a Master of Science in education administration, and Michaelis received a Master of Liberal Studies.
¢Alessandra K. McCoy, Lawrence, has been named to the Dean’s List for grades achieved during the fall 2006 semester at Boston Univer-sity.
¢Nicky Henriquez, Lawrence, was a member of the team from Topeka Collegiate School that won first place in the 24th annual Mathcounts regional competition on Feb. 10 at Kansas University. Nicky also took third place in the individual competition. The event featured students from middle schools in Topeka and Lawrence in a timed mathematics competition.
¢Heather Whitney Sesma, Ph.D., received the Nelson Butters Award, presented for the best research submission by a postdoctoral fellow, at the annual meeting of the International Neuropsychological Society in Portland, Ore. She presented her paper, “Executive Functioning in the First Year Following Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury,” on Feb. 9. Sesma is a second-year fellow in neuropsychology at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. She is the daughter of Wayne and Judy Whitney, Lawrence, and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1994 and Kansas University in 1998.
¢Susan Warden, Lawrence, earned highest honors for grades achieved during the fall 2006 semester at Skidmore College. Highest honors are given for a grade point average of 3.670 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Warden is the daughter of John Staples and Susan Warden, Lawrence. Skidmore College is in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
¢Avery Beck, a student at West Junior High School, was selected for the Junior National Young Leaders Conference on March 3-8 in Washington, D.C. Participants will visit historical sites and take part in educational activities and presentations as well as meeting with elected officials and congressional staff members.
¢Sean Muder, Lawrence, was named to the Dean’s List for grades achieved during the fall 2006 term at Austin College. Students named to the list earned a grade point average of at least 3.75 on a 4.0 scale and are ranked in the top 20 percent of the student body at the college in Sherman, Texas. Muder, a graduate of Lawrence High School, is the son of Chris and Laurie Muder.
