Amyx considers mandatory sentencing for guns near bars

In tonight's 6News and tomorrow's Lawrence Journal-World, Mayor Amyx wants to require jail time for people carrying guns near Lawrence's bars, and a local school will be teaching Spanish to all of its students.

Yes...they still have to adhere to the local gun oridnances in addition to the state laws. The local laws can be more restrictive so even if you get a concealed carry permit you might not get to carry it many places in Lawrence especially 100' from a bar (ie almost all of downtown)

I'm typing off the top of my head, but I don't think this will have any effect on concealed carry in those areas, and I think the weapons they intend to control with this will not be those owned by licensed concealed carriers.

If there is an ordinance on the books it will indeed provide some teeth for enforcement. Carry a gun near a bar and get caught, permit or not, you go to jail and pay a fine. I'm all for it.

Unless the plan is significantly better thought out than this blurb sounds, it's got a lot of problems.

Isn't requiring all students to learn spanish illegal?

And what about policemen with guns checking bars? Wouldn't that be as illegal as ccw permit holders with guns walking by outside of bars?
