Seabury boys rally to win regional opener

? Scotty King scored all 13 of his points in the second half, and the Seabury Academy boys basketball team rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to knock off host Bern, 41-37, on Tuesday in the opening round of a Class 1A regional tournament.

“They showed a lot of heart and character coming down the stretch,” said Seabury coach Matthew Downing Jr. “We just went about our business and whittled down the lead and didn’t try to force it or rush anything.”

The fifth-seeded Seahawks (4-12) were down 23-13 at the break, due in part to two quick fouls that put King – their primary inside option – on the bench. That left Seabury looking for points elsewhere, and they struggled to find them.

“Early in the game, we relied on the three-point shot too much and didn’t make many of them,” Downing said.

In addition to King’s big second half, Downing cited Max Cannon’s ability to knock down free throws in the closing minutes, and the Seabury bench’s ability to provide quality minutes while the starters were struggling, as keys to victory.

The Seahawks advance to play top-seeded Troy on Friday in Elwood.
