Chicago-bound flight makes return to KCI

An American Airlines flight to Chicago returned to Kansas City International Airport shortly after takeoff Monday when the crew reported smelling smoke in the cockpit.

The emergency landing was a precaution, and no injuries were reported, airline spokesman Tim Wagner said. It was not known what caused the smell.

Wagner said the 120 people on board were transferred to another plane and took off a short time later. The original flight had departed about 11:30 a.m.
