Veritas seniors finish in style

? The Veritas Christian boys basketball team may have struggled this year, but it celebrated Senior Night in style, defeating Topeka Heritage Christian, 77-45, on Saturday at the Eudora Community Learning Center.

“It was a great way for them to end their year,” Veritas coach Doug Bennett said.

The four seniors – Micah Barclay (22 points), Josh Masrud (13), Ben Reynolds (6) and Nathan Hammer (4) – each contributed to the victory.

Barclay scored 18 of his 22 in the second half and also added six assists.

But it was on the defensive side where the Eagles (4-18) blew the game open, forcing 33 turnovers.

“We played really well,” Bennett said.

Veritas continues its season Thursday with the start of the Kansas Christian Athletic Association state tournament. The opponent and game time have not yet been determined.

Eudora – The Eagles finally found the balanced scoring they’ve been looking for all season, with a quartet of options supplementing another big effort by Kristie Tiegreen.

Tiegreen tallied a triple-double with 29 points, 14 rebounds and 10 steals. However, teammates Marteka Carlton (eight points), Caroline Mayhew (six), Taelyr Shelton (six) and Susan Wilson (six) also chipped in on offense for Veritas (8-13).

“That’s been something our team has needed bad, has been consistent scoring other than Kristie,” said Veritas coach Kevin Shelton.

Just as important as the offense was a defensive scheme that allowed the Eagles to record 28 steals and steadily break open a game that was tied at 12 after the first quarter.

Veritas will open KCAA tournament play Thursday against Derby Christian at the Lenexa Christian Center. The game time has yet to be determined.
