Red foods can brighten your diet

Did you know red foods are some of the most nutritious? Here are a few that can boost your diet and help fight diseases, according to Woman’s Day:

¢ TOMATOES: Tomatoes are a good source of lycopene, a heart-saver that can lower your risk for cardiovascular disease by up to 50 percent.

¢ WATERMELON: This summer cookout and pool-party staple is another low-calorie source of lycopene. Plus, the fruit’s healthy dose of potassium improves muscle function and helps keep blood pressure low.

¢ RED BERRIES: Cranberries, raspberries and strawberries are all packed with antioxidants that protect against disease and premature aging. And if you’re prone to UTIs or cavities, the high acidity of cranberries can help keep bacteria from adhering to urinary tract walls and teeth, preventing infection and decay. Berries’ rich vitamin C content keeps your immune system strong, and fiber from the skins and seeds keeps you regular.

¢ RED WINE: The polyphenols in red wine can reduce your risk of heart disease and help lower bad cholesterol levels. Resveratol, an antioxidant found in grapes’ skins and seeds, may help further improve cholesterol levels, keep blood from forming dangerous clots and lower your cancer risk. You can also drink grape juice, which contains some of the same heart-healthy nutrients.
