Mayor Marci Francisco and City Commissioner Don Binns clashed twice on what Binns called free speech issues during the weekly commission meeting. One issue involved whether commissioners appearing on radio talk shows represented themselves or the commission. The other point of contention was whether the commission should allow comment at the end of the meeting on Commissioner Tom Gleason’s request for the city manager, Buford Watson, to resign or face firing.

Meanwhile, businessmen Dick Raney and Jack Arensberg called for common sense in the case of Watson and Gleason and said no good purpose would be served by getting rid of either. “My concern,” said Arensberg, “is for the community and for what this (a possible recall effort against Gleason) seems to be doing to it.”
