New charges filed in HIV exposure case

A man already sentenced to prison for exposing several women to HIV in Lawrence could now stand trial in Emporia on similar charges.

Robert W. Richardson II was back in court Thursday in Lyon County, charged with exposing a 29-year-old woman and a 31-year-old woman to the deadly virus.

According to the Lyon County Attorney’s Office, during Richardson’s preliminary hearing, a judge found there was probable cause to believe he exposed the two women to a life-threatening disease, both during sexual encounters at an Emporia motel.

The judge bound Richardson over for trial and ordered him to appear back in court March 2.

Richardson is currently being held in the Lyon County Jail. His bond is set at $50,000.

Richardson was sentenced to 32 months in prison, followed by probation after a jury found him guilty in the Douglas County cases in November.

He also has cases pending in Kansas City, Kan., and Johnson County, Mo.
