Carl Althaus, current Lawrence school board president, announced he would seek re-election to the board. He was a highly regarded education figure in the state as well as in Lawrence.

A number of UFO sightings had been reported here of late, with local residents saying the objects had bright tails and moved incredibly fast. Federal officials said they would make an effort to check on the local phenomena, but added they had doubts the sightings involved anything or anybody from outer space.
