Cougars use clutch free throws to advance

South battled back-and-forth with Shawnee Mission South for the duration of the game Wednesday afternoon, but when it came down to the wire, the Cougars stepped up to the line for a 48-46 win in the Warhawk Invitational at West Junior High.

The Cougars held a slim lead going into the break, 24-22, and even managed to build an eight point lead going into the final quarter. But South took advantage of Shawnee Mission South’s fouls and, although outscored in the fourth quarter, hit eight of 13 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Michael McCabe led the South scoring with 16, including three 3-pointers and five-of-six free throws in the fourth quarter.

Seth Dirks-Hamm added 12 for the Cougars and also hit three baskets from beyond the arc.

Marcus Ray had 10 points for South in the win.

The Cougars will face Ottawa tomorrow afternoon.
