Sidewalk sale decision deferred

A proposal by Downtown Lawrence Inc. to have exclusive use of the Massachusetts Street sidewalks during the annual Downtown Sidewalk Sale was deferred from Tuesday’s city commission meeting.

DLI leaders asked that the proposal be pulled from the agenda until they had more time to discuss the idea with their members and other downtown businesses. The proposal would have prohibited downtown merchants from setting up sidewalk booths during the sale unless they were a member of the nonprofit trade group.

Developers to resubmit plan for rezoning

A plan to rezone approximately 1 acre of vacant property at 523 to 543 Rockledge Road to double the number of homes that could be built on the site was pulled from the city’s agenda.

Developers had been seeking permission to build up to six homes on the site. Planning commissioners in December recommended denial of the project after several neighbors said the density of the project would not fit in with the existing neighborhood.

Paul Werner, an architect for the developers, told city commissioners Tuesday that the property owners now wanted to take a new, less dense plan back to the Planning Commission for consideration. Details of that plan weren’t revealed to commissioners. The Planning Commission is scheduled to hear the plan at one of its meetings in March.

Apartment complex plans approved

Commissioners unanimously approved plans for Aberdeen on Sixth Street, a multi-family project of 108 apartment units and four duplex units. The project is at the southeastern corner of Sixth Street and Stoneridge Drive.
