Jayhawks split tourney twinbill

? The Kansas University softball team split two games Saturday at the Campbell-Cartier Classic, knocking off San Diego State, 3-2, before falling to No. 6 Oregon State, 7-0.

Elle Pottorf went 3-for-3 for the Jayhawks in the opener, including a double and a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth that proved to be the game-winner. Nicole Washburn and Stevie Crisosto each contributed two hits for the KU offense.

Kassie Humphreys (2-0) earned the victory in the circle, allowing seven hits and striking out four in the complete-game effort.

Errors plagued KU in the second game, as the Beavers took advantage of four miscues – one in each of the first four innings – and collected eight hits to push across more than enough offense.

Meanwhile, the Jayhawks didn’t do much at the plate against Oregon State’s Brianne McGowan – the reigning Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year – and reliever Ta’Tyana McElroy. The exceptions were KU’s Dougie McCauley and Ally Stanton, who each collected two hits.

Freshman Sarah Vertelka suffered the loss in her first collegiate start, allowing seven runs – just three earned – in 41â3 innings.

KU (2-2) will wrap up tournament play today with an 11 a.m. game against No. 23 Massachusetts.
