Ted Owens’ Kansas basketball team ran its Big Eight record to 5-1 with an 84-58 rout of Nebraska. KU was rated No. 7 nationally.

A fire of undetermined origin swept through the Centenary Methodist Church at Fourth and Elm. It was estimated that at least $150,000 would be required to rebuild. The sanctuary portion of the church had been 100 years old.

The city and county commissions agreed to employ professional architectural services on a joint basis to determine needs for the two agencies and how best to balance them for maximum efficiency.

Milton P. Allen, former Kansas University basketball player under his father, Phog, replaced Charles Stough as city attorney.

Fire caused an estimated $30,000 in damage at the Kaw Valley Grain Co. of Perry. No injuries resulted. It took firemen about four hours to bring the evening blaze under control.

Though the past month had not been one of the best Januarys for local construction, city building inspector Ken Jorgensen said he thought 1967 might surpass the all-time high of $9.3 million in building, a mark et in 1965. He said “early evidence of eventual building activity is encouraging.”
