Brad and Samantha Hauber, Lawrence, announce the birth of their daughter, Savanna Noelle Hauber, born Jan. 20, 2007, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. She has a brother, Jordan, 6. Maternal grandparents are Charles and Denise Gauna, and Wes and Nancy Patterson, all of Lawrence. Paternal grandparents are Bill and Jackie Hauber, Lawrence.
¢Kirk Heinz and Julie Goans-Heinz, Lawrence, announce the adoption of a daughter, Ellie Grace Goans-Heinz, born Feb. 18, 2006, in Guatemala. Ellie came home to Lawrence on Jan. 6, 2007. She joins sister Jessie and brother Jake. Grandparents are Mike and Ann Goans, Lawrence, and Mervyn and Sherry Heinz, Cosby, Mo. Great-grandparents are Bob and Mildred Goans, Lawrence.
¢Russ and Beth Iversen, Lawrence, announce the birth of their daughter, Olivia Paige Iversen, born Feb. 3, 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long. Maternal grandparents are Doug and Lucinda Anstaett, Topeka. Paternal grandparents are Earl and Susan Iversen, Lawrence. Maternal great-grandparents are Richard and Janis Mickelson and Delores Anstaett, all of Lyndon. Paternal great-grandmother is Gabrielle MacHattie, Denver.
¢Several local students were honored at the Kansas State High School Activities Association’s Regional Piano Festival. Students receiving an outstanding (I) rating were Zach Stites, Lawrence High School; and Alex Anderson, Katherine Dick and Samantha Schueler, all of Free State High School. Earning excellent (II) ratings were Paul Eltschinger, Paige Hunter, Wolfgang Johanning, Sarah Long and Genevieve Rucker, all of LHS, and Betty Zhang, Adam Petz and Maxwell Gregoire, all of Free State.
¢The Clinton Lake Historical Society’s annual meeting and potluck will be at 6:30 p.m. today at Clinton Presbyterian Church, 596 N. 1200 Road. The meeting will include the election of officers and a presentation by Don Lambert on “The Free State Legislature: Dispersed and Disparaged.”
¢Ellie Kirk, Lawrence, was honored for having the best essay among fourth-graders in the “What’s Cool About Kansas” contest sponsored by The Topeka Capital-Journal. Ellie, a student at Langston Hughes School, received a $100 prize.
¢Several area officers graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center on Jan. 26. They include Patrolman Andrew P. Burns, Basehor Police Department; Deputy Sheriff Joey Frost, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office; Officer Tyler D. Branine, Ottawa Police Department; and Patrolman Winston Blake Wells, Wellsville Police Department. The center, a unit of Kansas University’s continuing education, is near Yoder.
¢Several Lawrence students were honored in the annual art contest sponsored by Native Sons and Daughters of Kansas. Honorees from Lawrence High School are Katie Kennedy and Dylan Smith, both finalists in black and white photography; and Gina Skinner, finalist in color photography. Honorees from Free State High School are Katy Hoffman, honorable mention in color photography; and Sarita Mahinay, honorable mention in pastels.
¢Oskaloosa High School announces its Students of the Month for January: Drew Beisel, a sophomore; Brooke Bailey, Alicia Erickson and Brock McGinnis, all juniors; and Lindsey Ottensmeier, a senior. They were honored for their positive contributions to the school and community.
¢Hollister Hartman received a master’s degree in legislative affairs in May 2006 from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Hartman is the daughter of Charles and Ingrid Hartman, Lawrence.
¢The Lawrence Breakfast Optimist Club celebrated 50 years of serving the youth of Lawrence and Douglas County with a gathering Dec. 9 at the Lawrence Holidome. The program included an oral history of the club, a meal and dancing to the music of Junkyard Jazz. ¢Anne Kettle and Merry Chadwick, both of Lawrence, will perform with the St. Olaf Band on the ensemble’s 2007 National Tour to the Pacific Northwest. Kettle, a senior at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., plays French horn in the band. Chadwick, also a senior, plays the oboe. The tour includes stops in Washington state, Oregon and Seattle.
¢Several area residents graduated recently from Fort Hays State University. They include Jacob Bennett Cline, Eudora; Caroline D. Selig and Jill N. Wahlmeier, both of Lawrence; Chad D. Beisel, Oskaloosa; and Jeremie D. Leiker, Tonganoxie.
¢Lia R. DeRoin, Lawrence, was named to the Dean’s List for grades achieved during the fall quarter of the 2006-2007 academic year at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. Students on the list earned a grade point average of at least 3.75. DeRoin is a senior majoring in percussion performance.
¢Two students from Lawrence were honored for grades achieved during the fall term at Washington and Lee University. John Joseph Parker was named to the dean’s list, and Thomas G. Bush was named to the honor roll. Students on the dean’s list earned a grade point average of at least 3.4 on a 4.0 scale, and students on the honor roll had a GPA of at least 3.75. Both are juniors at the university in Lexington, Va.
¢Richard Vetter, Lawrence, was named to the Dean’s List for grades achieved during the fall 2006 term at North Central College in Naperville, Ill. Students named to the list earned a grade point average of at least 3.6 on a 4.0 scale. Vetter is the son of Joseph Vetter and Elaine Ayala.
¢Lawrence schools claimed all three trophies in the K-6 division of the Topeka Collegiate Chess Tournament on Feb. 3. Quail Run School took first, Wakarusa Valley School, second, and Cordley School, third. Southwest Junior High won first place in the K-12 division. In K-8, Eudora Middle School finished third, as did Quail Run in K-3. Individually, SWJH’s Alan Shi and Wakarusa Valley’s Cal Young finished first in K-12 and K-6, respectively. Other medal winners in K-12 were Thomas Reams, SWJH, second; Roy Wedge, Central JH, fifth; Peter Lesslie, SWJH, sixth; Thomas Clark, SWJH, seventh; Kellen Cross, SWJH, 12th; Keely Stenseng, SWJH, 13th; Douglas Rawlings, 31st; and Alex Kincaid, SWJH, 47th.
