Legislation to help clean up after meth labs

Friday, Congresswoman Nancy Boyda announced the passage of the Methamphetamine Remediation Research Act.

The bill will not only help clean up meth labs, but also fund research on the health effects of meth residues.

Meth production creates toxic chemicals that are dangerous to the public.

Boyda says only about one in five meth labs are found, usually because they catch fire or explode.

“But even when a lab doesn’t burn down, meth production is extremely hazardous,” Rep. Nancy Boyda said. “Toxic chemicals collect on countertops and floors, and are absorbed into carpets and wall. Future residents risk exposure to these dangerous byproducts, and children are especially vulnerable.”

Boyda says the bill will also require the National Institute of Standards and Technology to develop field test kits, that will help law enforcement crack down on meth producers.
