Cheerleader spirits come back to life

The “Heroes” mantra, “Save the Cheerleader, Save the World,” resonates on tonight’s schedule. On “Ghost Whisperer” (7 p.m., CBS), the angry poltergeist of a deceased pep-squad member brings mayhem and misery to her former comrades, culminating in the poisoning of a high school coach (Mary J. Blige).

¢ Speaking of cheerleaders with super abilities, the cartoon character “Kim Possible” got a movie of her own, the 2005 animated feature “Kim Possible: So the Drama” (7 p.m., Disney). For the uninitiated, Kim is the brilliant daughter of a rocket-science dad and a brain-surgeon mom and spends her idle hours saving the world from evil.

This being a cartoon, the do-gooder deeds don’t put too much of a crimp in her social schedule. But Kim does feel deficient in the boyfriend department – unless you count her hapless sidekick, Ron, and his pet naked mole rat. All of the evil in the universe can’t keep Kim down, but the prospect of a dateless prom night could be her undoing.

¢ “Buffy, the Vampire Slayer” star Sarah Michelle Gellar stars in the 2004 horror film “The Grudge” (7 p.m., and 9 p.m., TNT). She plays an American exchange student who encounters evil spirits in a Japanese haunted house.

Critical reviews were mixed about this remake of a Japanese horror favorite. TV Guide’s Maitland McDonagh called it “one of the flat-out creepiest films ever released by a major American studio.” But the Philadelphia Inquirer deemed it more “laughable” than frightening.

¢ Eddie Murphy (“Dream Girls”) portrays an African prince searching for a bride in Queens, N.Y., in the 1988 comedy “Coming to America” (9 p.m., Comedy Central). The late humorist Art Buchwald claimed he came up with the idea and script for this film and successfully sued a Hollywood studio when he was denied credit and compensation. Buchwald died Jan. 17 after a long illness.

¢ Paul LeMat stars in the 1989 shocker “Puppet Master” (9 p.m., Fuse), featuring creatures named Pin Head, Leech Woman, Tunneler, Blade and Jester. It’s not to be confused with “The Muppets Take Manhattan” (7 p.m., TCM).

Tonight’s other highlights

¢ A celebrated archeological artifact vanishes on “Las Vegas” (8 p.m., NBC).

¢ New evidence reopens a 17-year-old missing-person case on “Numb3rs” (9 p.m., CBS).
