New Haskell president to be decided soon

Who will be the next president of Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence is up to Tom Dowd, director of the Bureau of Indian Education.

Haskell interviewed two candidates in January: John Derby, student services director at Flandreau Indian School in Flandreau, S.D.; and Linda Sue Warner, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs at the Tennessee Board of Regents.

Haskell and the National Haskell Board of Regents have submitted their recommendations to Dowd, according to Lori Tapahonso, Haskell’s public information officer.

Dowd said Wednesday that he would be making a decision in the next few weeks. He said he had almost completed the review of finalists, but wouldn’t say who they were.

“I am hoping to make a decision sooner than later,” he said.

Karen Swisher retired Dec. 31 after seven years as president. Serving as interim co-presidents are Venida Chenault and Marvin Buzzard.
