Nature walk slated Feb. 17 at Black Jack

A nature walk is scheduled Feb. 17 on the site of the future Black Jack Battlefield and Nature Park.

The tour will start at Pearson Memorial Park at the intersection of Douglas County roads E 2000 and N 175, approximately three miles southeast of Baldwin City on U.S. Highway 56.

Directions will be given where to park. The two-hour event will begin at 12:30 p.m.

Parsons ammo plant schedules turkey hunt

The Army Ammunition Plant near Parsons will conduct a public drawing for a limited number of hunters for the spring turkey season. The three-day hunt will be April 13-15.

Hunters must apply in pairs. Applicants must send their full name, drivers license number, social security number, date of birth, address, phone number and hunt type (turkey) on a 3×5 index card to the following address:

Last year, the success rate for this hunt was more than 80 percent.

Missouri sets record for archery deer kills

Bowhunters killed 43,524 deer during Missouri’s archery deer season, setting a record for their sport and helping push the 2006-07 state deer harvest to nearly a third of a million.

The previous archery deer harvest record of 37,036 was set during the 2005-06 season. The 2006-07 harvest is an 18 percent increase from the previous record.

The top three archery deer harvest counties were St. Louis, with 1,151, Callaway with 966 and Jackson with 964.

Missouri’s archery deer season opens Sept. 15 and runs through Jan. 15, closing only during the 11-day November portion of firearms deer season.
