SLT history

This is in response to Steve Craven’s letter to the editor of Dec. 28, in which he raised the question: “I wonder why the powers that be thought that building the South Lawrence Trafficway through a wetland and adjacent to a Native American prayer circle would be a good idea?”

The facts are the voters of Lawrence approved construction of the SLT through the “Haskell Bottoms” farmland. Former Haskell President Gerald Gipp did not object to construction, as planned by Douglas County and the state of Kansas, as he stated to us in a faculty and staff meeting. The prayer circle was constructed several years after the SLT was planned.
