Carl and Dana Jewers, Altoona, Iowa, announce the birth of their son, Kale Carlton Jewers, born Jan. 9, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. His brother is Jake, 2. Maternal grandparents are Darrel and Leah Rurode, Baldwin City. Paternal grandparents are Tom and Judy Jewers, Independence, Kan. His great-grandmother is Mary Stong, also of Independence.

Katrina Kline, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for her work during the fall 2006 semester at the University of Evansville. To be named to the list, students must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher at the university in Evansville, Ind. Kline is the daughter of Larry and Helen Kline, Lawrence.

Three area students have received Garvey Competitive Scholarships from Washburn University. Kyle Volle, Perry-Lecompton High School, is the top winner in the nation and will receive $2,000 a year, renewable annually. Other winners are Megan Barfield, Lawrence, and Mary Cox, Eudora, who will both receive $500 a year. Results were determined through a scholarship test.

Erin McDowell is being featured in an online video series documenting four students at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. The show, “Inside the CIA,” can be seen at www.epicurious.com/features/cia/. McDowell is a 2005 graduate of Free State High School.

¢Several Lawrence students were selected for the John Philip Sousa Kansas Junior Honor Band. The local honorees include:

¢The Lawrence Accredited Music Teachers Association will present a student recital at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H. Students performing include Sophie Laufer, Alita Joseph, Garrett Frank, Nolan Frank and Luke Rhodes. They represent the studios of Jean Drumm, Sylvia Frank and Carole Ross.

¢Nolan Whipple, an eighth-grader at Central Junior High School, won the school’s spelling bee on Jan. 23.

Nolan advanced through six rounds of competition before facing Trenton Carpenter in the final two rounds. Nolan will represent the school in the Douglas County Spelling Bee on Feb. 24.

¢Catherine M. Brann, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list at Furman University in Greenville, S.C., for the fall 2006 term. Students must earn a grade point average of 3.4 or higher to be named to the list.

¢Dulce Hernandez Shultz, Lawrence, studied Spanish in Barcelona, Spain, during the winter 2007 term as part of the Language Study Abroad Program at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. Shultz is the daughter of Jeffrey A. and Carmen H. Shultz.

¢Michael Holton, Tonganoxie, was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2006 semester at Pratt Community College.

¢Rebecca Cain and Seth Zahniser, both of Lawrence, were named to the dean’s list at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, for the fall 2006 term. Students on the dean’s list earned a grade point average between 3.25 and 3.64.

¢Joel Burg, Lawrence, has been named to the dean’s list for grades achieved during the fall 2006 semester at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. Students named to the list earned at least a 3.5 grade point average.

¢Several area students were named to the Dean’s Honor Roll for grades achieved during the fall 2006 semester at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. They are Krystal Kay Bishop, Basehor; Braxton Lane Nottingham, Lawrence; and Megan Renee Lawrence, McLouth. Students who earned a grade point average of 3.5 or higher were named to the honor roll.

¢Kayla Frost, Lawrence, was named to the Dean’s List for grades achieved during the fall 2006 semester at Hosftra University. Frost is a sophomore majoring in communications and television production at the university in Hempstead, N.Y.

¢Alison Lomas received the Anderson Chandler Scholarship for 2006 from Kansas University’s School of Business. A senior at KU, Lomas was nominated for the award by her business school professors and was selected by the 2006 Chandler Series lecturer, Matthew Rose. Rose is chief executive officer of BNSF Railway. Lomas is the daughter of John and Susan Lomas.

¢Several local students won awards at the Onaga High School Chess Tournament on Jan. 27. Southwest Junior High School won the second-place trophy in the K-12 division, while Wakarusa Valley and Cordley schools claimed the second and third place trophies, respectively, in K-6. Individually, SWJH’s Thomas Clark placed second in K-12, while Wakarusa Valley’s Lucas Suchy was second in K-6. Other local medal winners in K-12 were Sean Stenseng, Free State High School, fifth; Keely Stenseng, SWJH, sixth; Kellen Cross, SWJH, ninth; Alex Kinkaid, SWJH, 29th; and Lauren Ollila, Lawrence High School, 42nd.

¢Ian Adkins, Lawrence, is performing with Valparaiso University’s Chamber Concert Band during the current academic year.

The band, which focuses on original band compositions, is the premiere auditioned symphonic band at the university in Valparaiso, Ind. Adkins, son of Perry and Kaye Adkins, Lawrence, plays the baritone saxophone in the band. He is a senior majoring in music education.
