Sheriff seeks money to update jail software

The Douglas County Jail needs to improve some of its security systems, county commissioners were told Wednesday night.

The Douglas County Commission gave the sheriff’s office approval to spend up to $30,000 in making those improvements. Commissioners took that action after a closed-door executive session to discuss jail security issues with Undersheriff Ken Massey.

The money will be used to replace computer software that controls the opening and closing of some sliding security doors and cell doors inside the jail, Massey said after the meeting.

Massey, who is in charge of jail operations, said there had been “some issues” with the software. It has been used since the jail opened in 1999 and needs to be replaced, he said.
