Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 29, 1907: “Following the discovery that the Black Hand Society has established operations in Pittsburg, Kansas, the national headquarters of its organization, police raided the ‘mother’ house of the gang. Nineteen prisoners, wickedly armed, were taken. The house that was raided is in an obscure alley in the Italian quarter of Pittsburg and reportedly is a place in which assassination and murder are taught by older members with Italian backgrounds. : Many were surprised when Bishop Samuel Fallows of the Reformed Episcopal Church in Chicago announced that Christian Psychology is his new belief. Many say it is very similar to Christian Science. Plans are for meeting at which practitioners are ‘treated’ by prayer.”
