Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 28, 1907: “Officials are meeting to determine the best way to appoint a local man as county assessor. The goal is to get someone on the job who knows local property, probable values and who can organize so that assessments are fair and accurate. It is an important job. : Several people are saying that they put off buying Christmas presents until this week and that they are saving great amounts of money by the practice. Most, however, prefer to have gifts for the holiday proper. : Officials are in the area surveying public roads with an eye to establishing a Fort Leavenworth-Fort Riley road, to be be known as the fort-to-fort road. Their initial work seems to be done and many believe the road will come about. : The Missouri Pacific Railroad is being pressured to resume seven passenger lines it terminated without state approval. Latest word is that the trains will be back in operation by Jan. 5.”
