Drivers warned to exercise caution this morning

State transportation official reports snow-packed roads

As the overnight snow diminishes this morning, the Kansas Department of Transportation warns drivers to use caution.

It’s possible some snow and freezing drizzle will fall through mid-morning.

The transportation department reports no road closures because of the winter storm. But Kim Qualls, public affairs manager with KDOT, reports the storm has had this effect on area roads:

¢ Douglas, Atchison, Brown, Doniphan, Jackson, Lyon, Marshall, Nemaha, Osage, Pottawatomie, Riley and Wabaunsee counties: Roads are completely snow-packed.

¢ Kansas City metro area, including Leavenworth, Wyandotte and Johnson counties: Roads are mostly snow-packed.

¢ Shawnee County: Roads are completely snow-packed.

¢ Jefferson County: Roads are mostly snow-packed.

KDOT crews are continuing to treat roads, bridges and overpasses with a sand and salt mixture, and they are plowing roads.

But Qualls warns that roads – including ramps and overpasses – are slick, so drivers should be extra cautious as they head for work this morning.

She also reported that there continue to be weather-related accidents, with cars sliding off roads. She advised drivers to use caution, allow extra driving time, and be sure to turn on their headlights, and turn off their cruise control as they head out today.
