In local legislative races the past November, the top spenders won three of four seats up for grabs. They were Democrat Jessie Branson, who defeated Bob Schulte, Democrat Robin Leach, who defeated Eugene Schafer, Republican David Miller, who defeated Larie Davis. Democrat Betty Jo Charlton defeated Doug Lamborn, even though Lamborn spent more money.

Robert Hockett, a Kansas University senior from Stilwell, was getting ready for his studies at Oxford University in England as a result of his victory in the Rhodes Scholarship competition. He was majoring in English and political science.
